Could not recommend PENC enough!! Dewitt and Karen were awesome. They took the time to explain multiple different options of spray foam, coatings, and colors. They worked through my building size changes - several times. And they explained how each would work, what goes into it, (even did a cool fire demo). I feel like I actually KNOW about the product I had installed. The crew was quick, efficient, and clean!! Beyond happy with the finished product. Highly highly recommend PENC for any insulation needs!

I recently hired Positive Energy of North Carolina to encapsulate my home's attic and crawl space with spray foam insulation. DeWitt promptly responded to my query to inspect my house and provide a competitive estimate. Once the deposit was paid, Dewitt promptly did the job and dramatically improved my home's comfort. Dewitt has a deep knowledge of home performance and building science. If the need arises, I will again hire Positive Energy of North Carolina.

Home Performance NC performed an energy audit on my 1972 house in Chapel Hill. Mark explained the results along with a full report and went over my options with me. When the weatherization was complete, the ‘after’ test showed a HUGE improvement. No more leaks, house is fully insulated, and crawl space has a beautiful moisture barrier. Mark and his team were punctual, professional, and courteous. He even told me about the different rebates I qualified for. I highly recommend calling Home Performance NC!

I've used Home Performance NC to perform an energy audit of my home, as well as to replace some ductwork and insulation. The audit revealed a ton of areas that heat/air conditioning was allowed to escape - I knew that the house had a degree of inefficiency, but I would never have guessed how much. Mark advised me of the easiest and most economical repairs, many of which I could do myself. Mark's team was extremely professional, and the cost of the audit paid for itself in just a few months of dramatic decreases in my heating bill. The repairs Home Performance did on my ductwork was very reasonably priced. They were extremely professional, courteous and prompt. I'd highly recommend them to any homeowner. Thanks Mark!

Mark at Home Performance has been great to work with! He has a mastery of the science behind home energy efficiency that has helped us find the most cost effective way to reduce our bills. His crew sealed our crawl space a little over a year ago; they did a terrific job! They worked quickly, cleanly and, efficiently and our heating and cooling bills show the difference. I highly recommend his services... JK

Upon completion the site was cleaned thoroughly. The crew were very friendly and worked very hard. Their pricing is very competitive with other same service providers in the area. Tony and his crew from Insulation Commandos transformed my crawl space from a scary mess into something far cleaner, more organized, and much more effective for moisture control. They worked around my schedule, arrived exactly when they said they would, and used high-quality materials to get the job done right—in just one day. The improvement is so impressive, I might even be brave enough to step inside someday! I highly recommend Tony and the team at Insulation Commandos for their professionalism, efficiency, and quality work.

Kevin L★★★★★4 months ago

Had the plastic sheets on our crawl space dirt floor replaced and upgraded with new, thicker, better vapor barrier that is sealed to walls and pillars. Also added a commercial dehumidifier to address summertime dampness. Tony’s team of Chris, Patrick and Parker were here for about 8 hours. I inspected at completion and they immediately took care of a few issues. Looking forward to reorganizing and using my dry, clean new looking crawl space for storage. Thanks guys!

We recently solicited several estimates for sealing our attic and upgrading the insulation. After careful consideration, we ultimately did not chose to go with Insulation Commandos of Raleigh-Durham but we felt compelled to leave them a glowing reference based on our interactions with Chris. Chris, came to our home and gave us an honest and complete assessment of our attic and provided us a very competitive quotation while he was here. In addition, he answered all of our questions and we felt that he was very honest and straightforward. We feel Chris is someone you can trust in this industry. As mentioned earlier, we ultimately chose another company because we felt that it better addressed our particular needs but these folks were a very close second. We would have no hesitation in recommending Insulation Commandos to anyone in need of an attic insulation upgrade.

I was so impressed with the care and professionalism of JT’s Spray Foam Solutions. The team did an outstanding job with our spray foam insulation. They were careful and respectful, even covering our belongings so nothing would get dirty. When Bryce called ahead, he noticed our birds in the background, and explained they couldn’t safely be in the house during spraying or for 24 hours after. That level of detail and concern really means a lot to me. Highly recommend this company for both their quality work and genuine care!

I did not know what do expect from JT's Spray Foam Solutions as the vendor was contracted to me as part of a solar panel installation project. I ended up quite happy with the outcome. The crew arrived on time and went straight to work. I cannot imagine how unpleasant working in someone's attic in full protective gear during summer heat must be, though the crew was professional and courteous during the entire engagement; clean-up was quite thorough. The foreman explained the insulation process to me, which helped me better understand how spray foaming the attic will lead to greater efficiencies regarding heating and cooling the house. I recommend JT's Spray Foam Solutions for your attic insulation needs.

Cossondra Williams★★★★★2 years ago

I purchased solar panels from Top Tier and they used JT's Spray Foam Solutions to spray my attic and my crawlspace. I dealt with Connor mostly, and he was super professional and very knowledgeable. They told me all of their steps and what to expect, and make sure that I was happy with everything numerous times while they were working. I highly recommend this company.

Frequently Asked Questions — Spray Foam Insulation in Durham

Is spray foam insulation a good investment in Durham?
For homes in mixed-humid climates like Durham, NC, spray foam is typically an excellent investment. The combination of hot summers, cold winters, and significant humidity means your home faces insulation challenges year-round. Spray foam addresses all three — providing thermal insulation in both seasons while controlling moisture infiltration. Most homeowners in NC see payback periods of 4–7 years. As with any tight building envelope, ensure your home has adequate mechanical ventilation to manage interior moisture.
How does humidity affect spray foam insulation performance in Durham?
In mixed-humid climates like Durham, NC, moisture management is as important as thermal performance. Closed-cell spray foam acts as a Class II vapor retarder, preventing moisture from infiltrating walls and attics where it causes mold and structural damage. This dual function — insulation plus moisture control — is why spray foam outperforms traditional insulation options in NC's climate. However, because the building envelope becomes tightly sealed, proper mechanical ventilation is strongly recommended to allow interior moisture from daily activities to escape without losing conditioned air.
Is spray foam insulation worth the cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Spray foam creates an air-tight seal that traditional insulation cannot match, reducing energy bills by 15–35% annually. It also adds structural rigidity, acts as a moisture and vapor barrier, reduces outside noise, and can increase home resale value. The higher upfront cost compared to fiberglass is typically recovered within 3–7 years. One important note: because spray foam creates a very tight building envelope, proper mechanical ventilation is important to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent interior moisture buildup. This is typically handled by an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) — a system that brings fresh outside air in while pushing stale air out, recovering the energy from the outgoing air so you don't waste what you paid to heat or cool — or a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which works similarly but is optimized for cold climates. A qualified contractor will assess whether your home needs ventilation upgrades as part of the installation.
How much does spray foam insulation cost?
Spray foam insulation typically costs $1.00–$3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the type and your location. Open-cell foam runs $0.44–$0.65 per board foot, while closed-cell foam costs $1.00–$2.00 per board foot. A typical 2,000 sq ft home attic costs $2,000–$6,000. Most homeowners recoup this investment within 3–7 years through energy savings of 15–35% annually.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and less expensive. It expands significantly and is ideal for interior walls, attics, and soundproofing. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, stronger, and provides a moisture barrier — making it better for exterior applications, crawl spaces, and areas prone to flooding or humidity. Closed-cell also has a higher R-value per inch (R-6 to R-7 vs R-3.5 to R-4 for open-cell). One key difference: open-cell foam allows some vapor movement, while closed-cell acts as a vapor barrier — an important consideration for your home's ventilation needs.
How long does spray foam insulation last?
Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation options available, with a lifespan of 80+ years when properly installed. Unlike fiberglass batting which can sag and settle over time, spray foam maintains its shape and insulating properties indefinitely. It will typically outlast the building it is installed in.
How do I find a qualified spray foam insulation contractor?
Look for contractors who are licensed, insured, and have verifiable reviews. Spray foam requires specialized equipment and training — improper installation can cause off-gassing, adhesion failure, or fire hazards. Ask for references, verify their insurance, and get at least 2–3 quotes. A qualified contractor will also assess your home's ventilation needs — a tightly sealed spray foam installation requires adequate mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture and indoor air quality issues. FoamMatch pre-screens all listed contractors for licensing and insurance so you can compare verified professionals in your area.
How long does spray foam installation take?
Most residential spray foam jobs take 1–2 days depending on the size of the area. A standard attic takes 4–8 hours. After spraying, the foam cures within 24 hours, though most contractors recommend waiting 24–72 hours before occupying the space due to off-gassing during the curing process.
Does spray foam insulation need to be replaced?
No — spray foam insulation does not need to be replaced under normal circumstances. Unlike fiberglass insulation which degrades over time, spray foam maintains its R-value and air sealing properties for the life of the building. The only reasons to remove or replace spray foam are water damage, renovation work, or improper original installation.
