Ben was fantastic during our audit today! He was thorough and clearly explained the whole process to us. He made us feel confident that the issues we’re experiencing with our home energy efficiency are solvable and that he’ll have a detailed plan of action to make our home more efficient. Highly recommend Ben and Home Medics!

HEM came out to do an audit and estimate for a unique insulation and repair job in our new house. Ben, the tech who came out, was great — he was knowledgeable and explained things clearly. Very happy with their service visit.

Home Energy Medics did a terrific job in upgrading our home! We received a home energy audit from Matt C. and Ben E. -- they were very knowledgeable, thorough, and explained everything they were doing and their results. They made helpful recommendations, while also not pushing for upgrades that didn't make financial sense. We decided to have them insulate our attic, fix some poor ductwork on our heat pump, and Aeroseal our ducts, replace our bathroom exhaust fans and fix the ducting for them, along with a few other fixes to leaks and gaps in our attic and walls. We were out of town during the work, and they provided regular updates to keep us informed and in the loop. We are very pleased with the quality of the work -- we were warmer in the winter, and we're cooler in the summer. Thanks to Scott, Matt, Ben, and the whole team!

My attic insulation was recently replaced, and I was happy with the quality of the supplies and the level of care provided by the DMV Foam crew. They managed to complete the assignment on time and within the budget I was given. The men were kind and professional in how they treated every little detail. I am thrilled with everything about the procedure, especially the results.

I used DMV foam to redo my attic insulation. Borja, Kelvin, and team really know their stuff. I wanted to wait a while before writing my review to make sure the foam insulation was doing it's job. I've gotten quotes from at least five foam companies, and most seemed sketchy and not very knowledagble. Borja and Kelvin were the opposite. They took their time to explain the various brands of open cell foam they can use for the job. They explained all the applicable Virginia codes, R-values, foam application thickness, etc. We settled on Natural Polymers Ultra Pure open cell foam because I have kids in the house and wanted to minimize offgasing. Job took two days and they even built a new storage deck in the attic, which turned out better than expected. I was also impressed with foam insulation performance over the summer. Attic never got more than slightly warm. My upstairs space was cool and I no longer had to blast AC to compensate. Doing the foam insulation was well worth the investment. Highly recommend you give DMV Foam a call.

We had a bedroom over our garage which was significantly colder than the other rooms. DMV Foam sprayed closed cell foam in the ceiling of the garage and the exterior corners of the room. The work was done quickly and cleanly. The results have been excellent. This is an excellent company to work with.

Highly recommend Crawl Space Brothers! In one day, they transformed our crawl space from a junk filled, mildewy mess that we never could use into a clean, protected space where we can store things. Everyone we worked with was professional and friendly.

Friendly and considerate staff. Completed my project and cleaned everything up. Oliver was exceptional, seeing the project through from scheduling to completing the work. The pricing was very reasonable. I had gotten quotes from 8 other companies prior to contacting CSB. They were respectful of my needs and budget, willing to do the most critical aspect now and allow me to reach out in the future when I am ready to take on the rest. I will be utilizing their services again and highly recommend them.

Oliver and his crew did an amazing job! My house was built in 1970 and had over 50 years of cobwebs, lint, and dirt in the crawl space. The team thoroughly cleaned the space and did an excellent job of encapsulating the floor and walls. My humidifier works great and I love the small, portable monitor that I placed on my kitchen counter. Oliver taught me how to read the monitor and gave me his number to call should the humidity levels move out of range. I noticed immediately after installation that there is less dust and spiders, and more importantly, no critters in my house. One last thing, they did a great job of cleaning up after the job was done . I highly recommend them!

The best decision we ever made was having our upstairs properly insulated. We hired DMV ATTIC INSULATION and they did a FANTASTIC job. They were thorough and professional. They came on time and even cleaned up after themselves. We have already begun to see out heating expenses go down. Our only regret was waiting so long to get it done!

Leo and his team did an amazing job. They start by removing all the old insulation then they did air sealed and disinfected and finally they install new insulation all over the attic. The result is amazing, & the house feel much comfortable. I can already feel the difference. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions — Spray Foam Insulation in Washington

Is spray foam insulation worth the cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Spray foam creates an air-tight seal that traditional insulation cannot match, reducing energy bills by 15–35% annually. It also adds structural rigidity, acts as a moisture and vapor barrier, reduces outside noise, and can increase home resale value. The higher upfront cost compared to fiberglass is typically recovered within 3–7 years. One important note: because spray foam creates a very tight building envelope, proper mechanical ventilation is important to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent interior moisture buildup. This is typically handled by an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) — a system that brings fresh outside air in while pushing stale air out, recovering the energy from the outgoing air so you don't waste what you paid to heat or cool — or a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which works similarly but is optimized for cold climates. A qualified contractor will assess whether your home needs ventilation upgrades as part of the installation.
How much does spray foam insulation cost?
Spray foam insulation typically costs $1.00–$3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the type and your location. Open-cell foam runs $0.44–$0.65 per board foot, while closed-cell foam costs $1.00–$2.00 per board foot. A typical 2,000 sq ft home attic costs $2,000–$6,000. Most homeowners recoup this investment within 3–7 years through energy savings of 15–35% annually.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and less expensive. It expands significantly and is ideal for interior walls, attics, and soundproofing. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, stronger, and provides a moisture barrier — making it better for exterior applications, crawl spaces, and areas prone to flooding or humidity. Closed-cell also has a higher R-value per inch (R-6 to R-7 vs R-3.5 to R-4 for open-cell). One key difference: open-cell foam allows some vapor movement, while closed-cell acts as a vapor barrier — an important consideration for your home's ventilation needs.
How long does spray foam insulation last?
Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation options available, with a lifespan of 80+ years when properly installed. Unlike fiberglass batting which can sag and settle over time, spray foam maintains its shape and insulating properties indefinitely. It will typically outlast the building it is installed in.
How do I find a qualified spray foam insulation contractor?
Look for contractors who are licensed, insured, and have verifiable reviews. Spray foam requires specialized equipment and training — improper installation can cause off-gassing, adhesion failure, or fire hazards. Ask for references, verify their insurance, and get at least 2–3 quotes. A qualified contractor will also assess your home's ventilation needs — a tightly sealed spray foam installation requires adequate mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture and indoor air quality issues. FoamMatch pre-screens all listed contractors for licensing and insurance so you can compare verified professionals in your area.
How long does spray foam installation take?
Most residential spray foam jobs take 1–2 days depending on the size of the area. A standard attic takes 4–8 hours. After spraying, the foam cures within 24 hours, though most contractors recommend waiting 24–72 hours before occupying the space due to off-gassing during the curing process.
Does spray foam insulation need to be replaced?
No — spray foam insulation does not need to be replaced under normal circumstances. Unlike fiberglass insulation which degrades over time, spray foam maintains its R-value and air sealing properties for the life of the building. The only reasons to remove or replace spray foam are water damage, renovation work, or improper original installation.
