⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Better World Builders completed insulation and air-sealing work on my home in December 2025, and the improvement in performance has been significant. Prior to the work, the section of roof shown in the photo regularly developed severe ice dams and large icicles that extended to the ground. Since the upgrades, this issue has been dramatically reduced. The team removed all of the old, ineffective attic insulation and performed thorough air sealing before installing new insulation to properly separate the attic spaces from the conditioned living areas. Because my home is an older balloon-framed house, this made a substantial difference. They also applied spray foam along the perimeter of the basement and crawl spaces, as well as in the attics, installed a vapor retarder in the dirt crawl spaces to address moisture concerns, and added both roof can vents and a new gable vent. In addition to the high-quality workmanship, Better World Builders was professional and communicative throughout the entire project. A group text was established at the start, providing clear updates on scheduling, daily progress, and upcoming tasks, and it made it easy to communicate with the project managers whenever questions arose. Overall, it was an excellent experience working with Better World Builders. As an added benefit, my gas and heating bills are noticeably lower than last winter, my home stays more consistently warm, and the furnace runs far less often due to the improved air sealing and insulation.

Better World Builders just helped us complete insulating our 1912 Queen Anne in the Historic Vine Neighborhood this past spring. Mark and company love what they do and it shows. We started our adventure into energy efficiency with BWB in 2024 with their home energy evaluation. That was followed by the installation of a hybrid hot water heater. Instant results all around! Thanks BWB!

Tom and the entire Better World Builders team delivered outstanding service from start to finish. After experiencing draft issues in our 2017 home, we wanted a comprehensive energy evaluation rather than just focusing on problem areas. Additionally, we needed expert recommendations for insulating our basement before installing drywall. Tom's initial energy audit demonstrated impressive attention to detail. He conducted a thorough assessment of our entire home, providing comprehensive recommendations that we confidently accepted. Within weeks, their crew began work, maintaining excellent communication throughout the project. They kept us informed about arrival times, team members, and project milestones. What sets Better World Builders apart: Professional diagnosis without destructive methods (unlike other contractors who suggested removing drywall) Immediate, noticeable improvements in home comfort Clean, professional, and accommodating team members Exceptional adaptability to address emerging needs Superior problem-solving skills, identifying issues others might miss The team's expertise was evident in their ability to diagnose problems non-invasively, where other contractors had recommended extensive demolition. We experienced instant improvements in our home's comfort level after their work was completed. For anyone seeking solutions for inspections or home performance, I wholeheartedly recommend Better World Builders. Their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is outstanding. Special thanks to Tom and the entire team for their exceptional work!

Frequently Asked Questions — Spray Foam Insulation in Mattawan

These are the questions Mattawan homeowners ask most about spray foam cost, R-value, and open- vs. closed-cell foam — with context for local pricing and roughly 37% typical energy savings. Compare the 2 verified Mattawan contractors above for exact quotes.

Why is spray foam insulation especially important in cold climates like Mattawan?▼
In cold climates like Mattawan, MI, proper insulation is critical to preventing heat loss, ice dams, and frozen pipes. Spray foam's air-sealing properties stop the cold air infiltration that traditional insulation cannot address. It also prevents the moisture buildup inside walls that leads to mold in cold-weather freeze-thaw cycles. Homeowners in MI typically save 25–35% on heating costs. Note: in tightly sealed homes, proper mechanical ventilation is commonly recommended to maintain fresh air exchange without losing the heat you've paid for.
Does spray foam insulation prevent ice dams in Mattawan?▼
Yes — spray foam insulation is one of the most effective solutions for preventing ice dams in cold climates like Mattawan, MI. Ice dams form when heat escapes through a poorly insulated attic, melting snow that refreezes at the eaves. By creating an air-tight thermal barrier in the attic, spray foam eliminates the heat loss that causes ice dams in the first place.
What R-value do I need for spray foam insulation in Mattawan?▼
For cold climates like Mattawan, MI, the Department of Energy recommends attic insulation of R-49 to R-60. Closed-cell spray foam provides R-6 to R-7 per inch, meaning 8–10 inches achieves code-minimum performance. Open-cell foam at R-3.5 per inch requires greater thickness. A local contractor familiar with MI building codes can recommend the exact specification for your home.
Is spray foam insulation worth the cost?▼
For most homeowners, yes. Spray foam creates an air-tight seal that traditional insulation cannot match, reducing energy bills by 15–35% annually. It also adds structural rigidity, acts as a moisture and vapor barrier, reduces outside noise, and can increase home resale value. The higher upfront cost compared to fiberglass is typically recovered within 3–7 years. One important note: because spray foam creates a very tight building envelope, proper mechanical ventilation is important to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent interior moisture buildup. This is typically handled by an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) — a system that brings fresh outside air in while pushing stale air out, recovering the energy from the outgoing air so you don't waste what you paid to heat or cool — or a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which works similarly but is optimized for cold climates. A qualified contractor will assess whether your home needs ventilation upgrades as part of the installation.
How much does spray foam insulation cost in Mattawan, MI?▼
In Mattawan, MI and the surrounding area, spray foam insulation typically costs $1.00–$3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the type and your home's specifics. Open-cell foam runs $0.44–$0.65 per board foot, while closed-cell foam costs $1.00–$2.00 per board foot. A typical 2,000 sq ft home attic in Mattawan costs $2,000–$6,000. Most Mattawan homeowners recoup this investment within 3–7 years through energy savings of 15–35% annually.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?▼
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and less expensive. It expands significantly and is ideal for interior walls, attics, and soundproofing. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, stronger, and provides a moisture barrier — making it better for exterior applications, crawl spaces, and areas prone to flooding or humidity. Closed-cell also has a higher R-value per inch (R-6 to R-7 vs R-3.5 to R-4 for open-cell). One key difference: open-cell foam allows some vapor movement, while closed-cell acts as a vapor barrier — an important consideration for your home's ventilation needs.
How long does spray foam insulation last?▼
Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation options available, with a lifespan of 80+ years when properly installed. Unlike fiberglass batting which can sag and settle over time, spray foam maintains its shape and insulating properties indefinitely. It will typically outlast the building it is installed in.
How do I find a qualified spray foam insulation contractor in Mattawan, MI?▼
When searching for a spray foam contractor in Mattawan, MI, look for ones who are licensed, insured, and have verifiable reviews. Spray foam requires specialized equipment and training — improper installation can cause off-gassing, adhesion failure, or fire hazards. Ask for references, verify their insurance, and get at least 2–3 quotes. A qualified Mattawan contractor will also assess your home's ventilation needs — a tightly sealed spray foam installation requires adequate mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture and indoor air quality issues. FoamMatch pre-screens all listed contractors in Mattawan for licensing and insurance so you can compare verified professionals in your area.
How long does spray foam installation take?▼
Most residential spray foam jobs take 1–2 days depending on the size of the area. A standard attic takes 4–8 hours. After spraying, the foam cures within 24 hours, though most contractors recommend waiting 24–72 hours before occupying the space due to off-gassing during the curing process.
Does spray foam insulation need to be replaced?▼
No — spray foam insulation does not need to be replaced under normal circumstances. Unlike fiberglass insulation which degrades over time, spray foam maintains its R-value and air sealing properties for the life of the building. The only reasons to remove or replace spray foam are water damage, renovation work, or improper original installation.
