[South Central Services Insulation] provided excellent dryer vent cleaning service. Our dryer was overheating, and their technician discovered a massive lint buildup. He cleaned it thoroughly, improving both performance and safety. The dryer now dries clothes quickly, and I feel relieved knowing the fire risk is gone. The technician was polite, professional, and very knowledgeable. He arrived on time, worked efficiently, and left no mess behind. The cost was fair, and the peace of mind is priceless. I will definitely schedule regular cleanings with [Company Name]. Their professionalism, honesty, and skill make them the best in the business. Highly recommended!

Great experience with Josh and the Western Cary crew. After a job went sideways with another insulation provider, Josh came in, gave me an estimate and got the job done in time for drywall! All around a holiday. Josh has a "can do" attitude and is great to work with. I highly recommend him and the company!

Met with Toby to get an estimate on attic insulation. He got an estimate out in a few days. Install only took about 1 1/2 hours, workers did a fine job of cleaning up when they were done. My renter said they noticed an improvement in the warmth of the house almost immediately. I would definitely recommend Western Cary for insulation.

Got insulation from their Spray Foam Solutions group. Price was high, but what I had been warned to expect. Showed up one day late after informing me a couple days before, but finished job in exactly the time I was told. Cleaned up well after their work (except I found one screw near the driveway). Supremely nice people to work with. Did not require any obnoxious contract provisions as so many other contractors do lately.

Stephen and his team did a fabulous job of insulating a space behind a bedroom wall and adjacent bathroom wall that was completely uninsulated. We suffered through two cold winters that heaters couldn't solve in these room. Stephen evaluated the project efficiently and then oversaw the work. It was performed beautifully by the team and they cleaned up before leaving. Everything was immaculate. Most impressed with this company and this project manager.

My husband and I called Home Guard when we discovered a crack in our foundation. Our home is over 100 years -old, lovely, historic, but with quirks due to its age. We were unsure just what that crack was telling us, but afraid that the message might be a costly, bad one... Seth Hall came the next day after our call; after we had waited 2 weeks for another company to come for their appointment and advice--! Seth analyzed the situation, looking outside and in the basement too, giving us both his carefully-measured thoughts on what should be done to solve our cracked foundation issue. Our surprise was this: Home Guard's Seth Hall advised us to seek the counsel of a Structural Engineer, a person not on their staff. We followed this advice, and at our second "cracked foundation" meeting with Seth Hall, Chris Paxson (owner) and the Structural Engineer, we spent an hour together looking, analyzing, thinking, measuring, researching, discussing, more thinking, a little stomping! and finally concluding! In the end, all great minds agreed that we needed no foundation repair- only crack repair and repointing. Another company could have taken advantage of our inexperience with old foundations and charged thousands of dollars for an unnecessary fix... Our Conclusion... HOME GUARD HELPS YOU FIND A SOLUTION TO YOUR HOME'S SITUATION OR PROBLEM--- EVEN IF THEIR COMPANY IS NOT THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM! WOW! * The Company philosophy- STELLAR * The People - knowledgeable, able to communicate difficult concepts, wonderful

I've been a homeowner for 21 years. In all that time, I have used dozens of contractors for renovation, HVAC, roofing, electrical, plumbing, etc. I can now add Dan Smallenbroek as only the third contractor/consultant that I trust implicitly to that list. Prior to working with Dan, I received an estimate from another highly regarded insulation company for attic encapsulation. In fact, that company's name was the only one I had heard from anyone I asked about potential insulation companies. The salesman was knowledgeable, but had a one size fits all approach. This other guy didn't try to understand what I was trying to accomplish and just kept telling me that trying anything else would not work. I called Accurate Insulation to get a second estimate to see if it jived with the competitor's. I explained to Dan that I thought I already had a good company with a reasonable quote but wanted to make sure I was getting what I really wanted. Dan promised to come out, survey my attic, and give an honest recommendation. With his help and collaboration, I picked a system that worked for finishing an attic. He spent a significant amount of time educating me about R values, the difference between blown in, fiberglass, open and closed cell insulation, and the rebates and tax credits for which I was potentially eligible. He was never pushy and not for a second did I feel that he was trying to upsell. The energy audit ended up getting me a 35% rebate which Dan facilitated on the front side. He also gave me the resources to help me apply for a federal tax credit which means the final cost for the entire insulation project will be a whopping 50% off Accurate's quoted price. This doesn't mean others will have the same result, but it's nice learning ahead of time what your all-in cost will be instead after the fact when you're not eligible anymore. The energy audit process means that everything takes more time, but it also means you'll probably make a better informed decision at a fraction of what a job actually costs. It's 91 degrees oustide right now. My HVAC unit currently sits in conditioned air space at 74 instead of 130 degrees and we're in the process of having the attic finished off as an office for my wife. I'd be remiss in not saying Accurate's energy auditor, Mike Sears, spent an extra 90 minutes post-audit going over problem areas in my house and offering his own insights for improving energy efficiency. The encapsulation reduced air flow loss by 31% which has to translate to lower heating and cooling costs going forward. If you're considering insulating your attic, I can not recommend Dan Smallenbroek and his crew with Accurate Insulation highly enough. Much obliged - Kevin & Diann

Frequently Asked Questions — Spray Foam Insulation in Hagerstown

Is spray foam insulation a good investment in Hagerstown?
For homes in mixed-humid climates like Hagerstown, MD, spray foam is typically an excellent investment. The combination of hot summers, cold winters, and significant humidity means your home faces insulation challenges year-round. Spray foam addresses all three — providing thermal insulation in both seasons while controlling moisture infiltration. Most homeowners in MD see payback periods of 4–7 years. As with any tight building envelope, ensure your home has adequate mechanical ventilation to manage interior moisture.
How does humidity affect spray foam insulation performance in Hagerstown?
In mixed-humid climates like Hagerstown, MD, moisture management is as important as thermal performance. Closed-cell spray foam acts as a Class II vapor retarder, preventing moisture from infiltrating walls and attics where it causes mold and structural damage. This dual function — insulation plus moisture control — is why spray foam outperforms traditional insulation options in MD's climate. However, because the building envelope becomes tightly sealed, proper mechanical ventilation is strongly recommended to allow interior moisture from daily activities to escape without losing conditioned air.
Is spray foam insulation worth the cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Spray foam creates an air-tight seal that traditional insulation cannot match, reducing energy bills by 15–35% annually. It also adds structural rigidity, acts as a moisture and vapor barrier, reduces outside noise, and can increase home resale value. The higher upfront cost compared to fiberglass is typically recovered within 3–7 years. One important note: because spray foam creates a very tight building envelope, proper mechanical ventilation is important to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent interior moisture buildup. This is typically handled by an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) — a system that brings fresh outside air in while pushing stale air out, recovering the energy from the outgoing air so you don't waste what you paid to heat or cool — or a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which works similarly but is optimized for cold climates. A qualified contractor will assess whether your home needs ventilation upgrades as part of the installation.
How much does spray foam insulation cost?
Spray foam insulation typically costs $1.00–$3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the type and your location. Open-cell foam runs $0.44–$0.65 per board foot, while closed-cell foam costs $1.00–$2.00 per board foot. A typical 2,000 sq ft home attic costs $2,000–$6,000. Most homeowners recoup this investment within 3–7 years through energy savings of 15–35% annually.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and less expensive. It expands significantly and is ideal for interior walls, attics, and soundproofing. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, stronger, and provides a moisture barrier — making it better for exterior applications, crawl spaces, and areas prone to flooding or humidity. Closed-cell also has a higher R-value per inch (R-6 to R-7 vs R-3.5 to R-4 for open-cell). One key difference: open-cell foam allows some vapor movement, while closed-cell acts as a vapor barrier — an important consideration for your home's ventilation needs.
How long does spray foam insulation last?
Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation options available, with a lifespan of 80+ years when properly installed. Unlike fiberglass batting which can sag and settle over time, spray foam maintains its shape and insulating properties indefinitely. It will typically outlast the building it is installed in.
How do I find a qualified spray foam insulation contractor?
Look for contractors who are licensed, insured, and have verifiable reviews. Spray foam requires specialized equipment and training — improper installation can cause off-gassing, adhesion failure, or fire hazards. Ask for references, verify their insurance, and get at least 2–3 quotes. A qualified contractor will also assess your home's ventilation needs — a tightly sealed spray foam installation requires adequate mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture and indoor air quality issues. FoamMatch pre-screens all listed contractors for licensing and insurance so you can compare verified professionals in your area.
How long does spray foam installation take?
Most residential spray foam jobs take 1–2 days depending on the size of the area. A standard attic takes 4–8 hours. After spraying, the foam cures within 24 hours, though most contractors recommend waiting 24–72 hours before occupying the space due to off-gassing during the curing process.
Does spray foam insulation need to be replaced?
No — spray foam insulation does not need to be replaced under normal circumstances. Unlike fiberglass insulation which degrades over time, spray foam maintains its R-value and air sealing properties for the life of the building. The only reasons to remove or replace spray foam are water damage, renovation work, or improper original installation.
