My wife and I were quoted by a popular termite and moisture service and quoted $8,000 to treat moisture. I called Lucas from Premeir Moisture for a second opinion on Thursday, and he showed up FRIDAY morning! Very professional, took me under the house with him and showed me what he was looking for. Once the inspection was complete, he quoted me only $5,000 to complete the work. The best part, is the work was started AND completed SATURDAY by noon! Three days from first contact to job completion. I would recommend Lucas and his team to anybody! I challenge any homeowner to get a moisture inspection, quote, and work done in threw days from anyone else. THANK YOU LUCAS!

Premier Moisture did an excellent job at a great price in a very professional manner! I had to correct 3 sources of moisture in my crawlspace. Once completed, the Premier Moisture Control team removed all of the old (saturated) insulation, treated for mold, leveled low spots with sand, installed quality 12mil vapor barrier, sealed crawl space vents, and installed a quality dehumidifier. Again, the price was great for all of the work they did, and we were super pleased with the results. I'd recommend them for all of your crawlspace moisture needs.

Did an absolutely amazing job. Lucas and his team completely encapsulated our crawl space for a very reasonable price and came back multiple times to ensure his work was sound. Highly recommend this company!

Northern Virginia Foam was a life saver for our home-based business. I have never hired a contractor for a job of this magnitude, but I was so relieved to be put in contact with professionals who assured me they had experience handling residential sized projects with ease. They finished just in time for the change of season last year and we haven't had any issues since! Highly recommend!

Brian Handy and Antonio, were fantastic. They did a full attic restoration (remove rock wool, air seal, blow in insulation, attic tent, gable vent screens, platform/catwalk, and energy audit). They were great to work with, provided a veterans and cash discount which was very competitive with three other companies quoted. I would work with them again and have referred them to my neighborhood because I was so impressed with their work!

Brian and his crew are extremely polite, hardworking, professional and dedicated to their craft. They thoroughly removed the old insulation on the first day and applied the open-cell spray foam insulation on the second. The difference in our home’s temperature regulation was noticeable almost immediately. We highly recommend their services.

The air sealing and attic blown-in insulation performed by the crew of 3 was nothing short of stellar. They worked diligently and kept me posted on each stage of the progress. It was money well spent period. Temp at the top floor is now constant, and my heat pump runs much less frequently. A++ quality, and work ethics.

We used American Building Systems to handle a small insulation job at our home. Matt Shelton was our contact. Matt returned my call promptly, showed up on time to work up a quote and was very knowledgeable about what had to be done. On the day of the install the big truck and two guys arrived right on time and completed the job quickly. The two workers were respectful to us and our home, cleaned up after and did a great job. The cost was reasonable and competitive. We are very satisfied.

Frequently Asked Questions — Spray Foam Insulation in Chesapeake

Is spray foam insulation a good investment in Chesapeake?
For homes in mixed-humid climates like Chesapeake, VA, spray foam is typically an excellent investment. The combination of hot summers, cold winters, and significant humidity means your home faces insulation challenges year-round. Spray foam addresses all three — providing thermal insulation in both seasons while controlling moisture infiltration. Most homeowners in VA see payback periods of 4–7 years. As with any tight building envelope, ensure your home has adequate mechanical ventilation to manage interior moisture.
How does humidity affect spray foam insulation performance in Chesapeake?
In mixed-humid climates like Chesapeake, VA, moisture management is as important as thermal performance. Closed-cell spray foam acts as a Class II vapor retarder, preventing moisture from infiltrating walls and attics where it causes mold and structural damage. This dual function — insulation plus moisture control — is why spray foam outperforms traditional insulation options in VA's climate. However, because the building envelope becomes tightly sealed, proper mechanical ventilation is strongly recommended to allow interior moisture from daily activities to escape without losing conditioned air.
Is spray foam insulation worth the cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Spray foam creates an air-tight seal that traditional insulation cannot match, reducing energy bills by 15–35% annually. It also adds structural rigidity, acts as a moisture and vapor barrier, reduces outside noise, and can increase home resale value. The higher upfront cost compared to fiberglass is typically recovered within 3–7 years. One important note: because spray foam creates a very tight building envelope, proper mechanical ventilation is important to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent interior moisture buildup. This is typically handled by an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) — a system that brings fresh outside air in while pushing stale air out, recovering the energy from the outgoing air so you don't waste what you paid to heat or cool — or a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which works similarly but is optimized for cold climates. A qualified contractor will assess whether your home needs ventilation upgrades as part of the installation.
How much does spray foam insulation cost?
Spray foam insulation typically costs $1.00–$3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the type and your location. Open-cell foam runs $0.44–$0.65 per board foot, while closed-cell foam costs $1.00–$2.00 per board foot. A typical 2,000 sq ft home attic costs $2,000–$6,000. Most homeowners recoup this investment within 3–7 years through energy savings of 15–35% annually.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and less expensive. It expands significantly and is ideal for interior walls, attics, and soundproofing. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, stronger, and provides a moisture barrier — making it better for exterior applications, crawl spaces, and areas prone to flooding or humidity. Closed-cell also has a higher R-value per inch (R-6 to R-7 vs R-3.5 to R-4 for open-cell). One key difference: open-cell foam allows some vapor movement, while closed-cell acts as a vapor barrier — an important consideration for your home's ventilation needs.
How long does spray foam insulation last?
Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation options available, with a lifespan of 80+ years when properly installed. Unlike fiberglass batting which can sag and settle over time, spray foam maintains its shape and insulating properties indefinitely. It will typically outlast the building it is installed in.
How do I find a qualified spray foam insulation contractor?
Look for contractors who are licensed, insured, and have verifiable reviews. Spray foam requires specialized equipment and training — improper installation can cause off-gassing, adhesion failure, or fire hazards. Ask for references, verify their insurance, and get at least 2–3 quotes. A qualified contractor will also assess your home's ventilation needs — a tightly sealed spray foam installation requires adequate mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture and indoor air quality issues. FoamMatch pre-screens all listed contractors for licensing and insurance so you can compare verified professionals in your area.
How long does spray foam installation take?
Most residential spray foam jobs take 1–2 days depending on the size of the area. A standard attic takes 4–8 hours. After spraying, the foam cures within 24 hours, though most contractors recommend waiting 24–72 hours before occupying the space due to off-gassing during the curing process.
Does spray foam insulation need to be replaced?
No — spray foam insulation does not need to be replaced under normal circumstances. Unlike fiberglass insulation which degrades over time, spray foam maintains its R-value and air sealing properties for the life of the building. The only reasons to remove or replace spray foam are water damage, renovation work, or improper original installation.
