I have very high expectations and am typically disappointed about something whenever I have to hire someone to do something. I usually just do everything I can myself. In short, this is the company to hire for a radon mitigation system and don't even waste your time getting another bid. Read on if you want more specifics why. Big Mountain Insulators is small and family owned. Joe chooses to remain small and keep his quality high by doing all installs himself. He spent all the time necessary to answer my many questions and also locate the most appropriate location to install in radon mitigation system from on the inside and outside of the house. I was considering doing the install myself, but didn't own a 28 ft ladder, a SDS MAX hammer drill, or a very expensive 5 inch core drill bit. He identified a third and better location that I hadn't even considered previously that hides the system in the rear corner of the house by the electrical panel and landscape lighting transformer. He talked through exactly where and how he would run the new 15 amp circuit, conduit, fan motor, interior pipe, and exterior pipe. He explained it so well I could be considered an apprentice radon mitigator. He painted it to my color of choice and even masked off the fan motor label so it could still be read. He offered to go through the roof and soffit, but I chose to have him go around the roof. He also advised me to seal the expansion cracks in my concrete floor basement which I did myself with self leveling sealant. Joe was very respectful. He offered to take his shoes off before coming in the house. When he was working in the house he laid down drop cloths along his entire working path from the rear patio door into the house to the install location. There was no dust since he used a HEPA filter in his dust mitigation system. He used spray foam and caulk to seal the hole for the pipe out of the wall of the house. He even caulked a section of my window matching brown that he saw was missing. I own my own radon detector (EcoQube) and my average radon level for over a month of testing was 10.0 pCi/L. After the mitigation system was installed Joe's professional 48 hour monitor tested it at 0.5 pCi/L which is very close to my current running weekly average of 0.6 pCi/L. I have read the outside radon levels average 0.4 pCi/L. I had done extensive research on radon mitigation and had a ballpark range of what it would cost. His price was basically right in the middle of what I was expecting and he even included painting it! I was so pleasantly surprised at his quality of work. It's not even worth getting 3 different bids and going with the cheapest. You will not be disappointed. Joe and Big Mountain Insulators is the company to hire. The only improvement he could have made was having it done the day before I met and hired him.
Joe at Big Mountain Insulators did a great job on our radon mitigation system and we would highly recommend them! We really appreciated their approach of not treating every house the same but instead taking the time to find the right system for our specific space/needs. Joe was super friendly and went the extra mile to make sure our system worked perfectly, and the radon levels were far below the allowed EPA threshold. We also found Big Mountain Insulation's rates to be very fair, even a bit lower than some of their competitors in the valley.
Short story: Highly recommend! Professional, competent and a pleasure to work with. Longer story: Estimate was clear, timely and very reasonable. Judy was always lovely to talk with while scheduling our project. Joe went above and beyond before the project to make sure we understood what he was doing and why it needed to be done. He explained possible alternatives and risks/benefits of each choice. Joe has to be one of the nicest and honest people you will ever meet, you can tell he takes pride in his work. Not only did he do a great job on our radon mitigation system (brought our level down to ~0.5pCi/L) but also painted it to make it aesthetically appealing. As an added bonus, he painted a few other things to match. He even gave us some other useful homeowners tips. Truly enjoyed having him work in and on our home.
