We had the floor of a second story screened porch that we converted to a three season room spray foam insulated by Halo. First Tim who was my contact person was very patient and understanding as they had to wait for the contractor who installed the room to finish. He communicated regularly until the job was done. When his crew cam out they were fantastic. Very polite and knowledgable. They covered everything around including plants, finished the job in just a couple of hour and cleaned up like no one was ever there. I would definitely use them for another project and recommend them for others. Thanks again.

We are extremely pleased with the service we received from Halo. Tim was very helpful in determining what we needed to do to have better insulation in our problem area. He communicated clearly with us each step of the process. The crew was very efficient and had our project done quickly. We highly recommend HALO.

Tim went over everything with me and that made it easy for me to decide what was my best course of action. Tim and the group really knocked it out of the park with my old 1860's farmhouse. I had them close spray foam my attic and our old limestone basement walls. The entire group was absolutely professional and great to work with. They were spot on with their hours for both jobs and most of all did amazing work. I had an attic that was drafty and now it is sealed plus has a modern face lift. After installing my insulation, the temperature went from 130 degrees to 90, I was so impressed. My basement I have had horrible issues with spyders and water, Now It is sealed, dry and no more nuisance pests. I can't say enough good things about the service and the workmanship they offer. I thought the price was affordable for the product I received. These were truly great people, and it was an absolute pleasure doing business with them. I will keep them in mind for any future needs that me and my family might have.

Freedom Foam Insulators just finished yesterday and I am extremely happy with the service that they provided. They returned our phone calls in a very timely manner when we were looking for estimates, they arrived at our house at the time that I was told they would be there, they were professional and courteous. The crew came in and taped off the areas, asked if they were getting all the areas I wanted, volunteered suggestions that I had not thought of, and cleaned up once they were done. I will definitely use them again if the need ever arises! THANK YOU!

Over the past 7 years, Freedom Foam Insulators has insulated much of the interior of American Mini Storage. They have also insulated 30 of our 8x20 outdoor storage containers and 14 of our 8x40 outdoor storage containers. The results have been outstanding. Insulating the storage units has eliminated the problem of condensation, mold and mildew. The quality of their workmanship has been superior and Kevin Frisbee, the owner of Freedom Foam, has frequently gone the extra mile to complete last minute projects. We will continue to use Freedom Foam Insulators and highly recommend them.

Freedom Foam Insulators were on time, professional, and didn't leave a mess behind. I had open cell spray foam applied to the ceiling of my building in downtown Fort Madison, which is now Rev Fitness. We left the spray foam exposed since we wanted the industrial look. The Gentleman applying made it look great, we are super satisfied with this company!

We did not know that they also did crawl spaces so that was a plus for us. That will be our next project with them. Keep up the great work EXTREME SPRAY FOAM👏

Spoke with the owner about an upcoming project I'm working on. He was able to give me an estimate over the phone, plus give me a lot of information and ideas I hadn't thought about, being as I don't do these projects every day. Very knowledgeable and helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions — Spray Foam Insulation in Iowa City

How much can spray foam insulation save on heating and cooling bills in Iowa City?
Homeowners in mixed climates like Iowa City, IA typically see 20–30% reductions in total energy costs after spray foam installation. The savings come from both reduced heating in winter and reduced cooling in summer. The exact savings depend on your home's current insulation, size, and local energy rates, but most homeowners recoup the investment within 3–6 years.
Is spray foam better than fiberglass insulation for homes in Iowa City?
For most homes in Iowa City, IA, spray foam outperforms fiberglass significantly. Fiberglass batts insulate but do not air seal — meaning conditioned air still escapes through gaps. Spray foam both insulates and creates an airtight seal, addressing the root cause of energy loss. While spray foam costs more upfront, the performance difference in mixed climates makes it the better long-term investment for most homeowners.
Is spray foam insulation worth the cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Spray foam creates an air-tight seal that traditional insulation cannot match, reducing energy bills by 15–35% annually. It also adds structural rigidity, acts as a moisture and vapor barrier, reduces outside noise, and can increase home resale value. The higher upfront cost compared to fiberglass is typically recovered within 3–7 years. One important note: because spray foam creates a very tight building envelope, proper mechanical ventilation is important to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent interior moisture buildup. This is typically handled by an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) — a system that brings fresh outside air in while pushing stale air out, recovering the energy from the outgoing air so you don't waste what you paid to heat or cool — or a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which works similarly but is optimized for cold climates. A qualified contractor will assess whether your home needs ventilation upgrades as part of the installation.
How much does spray foam insulation cost?
Spray foam insulation typically costs $1.00–$3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the type and your location. Open-cell foam runs $0.44–$0.65 per board foot, while closed-cell foam costs $1.00–$2.00 per board foot. A typical 2,000 sq ft home attic costs $2,000–$6,000. Most homeowners recoup this investment within 3–7 years through energy savings of 15–35% annually.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and less expensive. It expands significantly and is ideal for interior walls, attics, and soundproofing. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, stronger, and provides a moisture barrier — making it better for exterior applications, crawl spaces, and areas prone to flooding or humidity. Closed-cell also has a higher R-value per inch (R-6 to R-7 vs R-3.5 to R-4 for open-cell). One key difference: open-cell foam allows some vapor movement, while closed-cell acts as a vapor barrier — an important consideration for your home's ventilation needs.
How long does spray foam insulation last?
Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation options available, with a lifespan of 80+ years when properly installed. Unlike fiberglass batting which can sag and settle over time, spray foam maintains its shape and insulating properties indefinitely. It will typically outlast the building it is installed in.
How do I find a qualified spray foam insulation contractor?
Look for contractors who are licensed, insured, and have verifiable reviews. Spray foam requires specialized equipment and training — improper installation can cause off-gassing, adhesion failure, or fire hazards. Ask for references, verify their insurance, and get at least 2–3 quotes. A qualified contractor will also assess your home's ventilation needs — a tightly sealed spray foam installation requires adequate mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture and indoor air quality issues. FoamMatch pre-screens all listed contractors for licensing and insurance so you can compare verified professionals in your area.
How long does spray foam installation take?
Most residential spray foam jobs take 1–2 days depending on the size of the area. A standard attic takes 4–8 hours. After spraying, the foam cures within 24 hours, though most contractors recommend waiting 24–72 hours before occupying the space due to off-gassing during the curing process.
Does spray foam insulation need to be replaced?
No — spray foam insulation does not need to be replaced under normal circumstances. Unlike fiberglass insulation which degrades over time, spray foam maintains its R-value and air sealing properties for the life of the building. The only reasons to remove or replace spray foam are water damage, renovation work, or improper original installation.
