It was finally time to reroof my house with new shingles. MRC Roofing provided me with a quote to install new rubberized asphalt shingles made by Malarkey. My current shingles didn’t have rubberized asphalt and so they were brittle and breaking off in the wind. I chose a line of shingles called Malarkey Highlander that had a light reflective quality. MRC started my roof on a Friday. They weren’t able to get the shingles delivered on time so they installed two layers of underlayment so that my house would be watertight over the weekend. The shingle supply house upgraded me to a heavier shingle (Malarkey Vista) for free. On Monday my roof was finished. I got a free 2nd layer of felt underlayment and a free shingle upgrade. MRC also provided a free solar attic fan as a promotional last month. Because MRC is a certified installer for Malarkey shingles, they were able to provide me with an extended warranty for only 10 cents a square foot, which covers labor (25 years) and material (50 years). The warranty is also transferable one time to a new owner. I highly recommend MRC Roofing if you are looking for a quality installation.

MRC reroofed our pool house last year with Canadian cedar shake. It turned out so well that we decided to come back to reroof the main house. As before, MRC out right away for a free estimate. Victor, the salesman advises us that the building code now specifies that we needed to add a new layer of plywood since Hawaii is now listed as a hurricane susceptible state. In addition to the roof, MRC expertly installed two new skylights in our kitchen and bathroom. MRC’s crew cleaned up after themselves single every night. They even took their porta-potty away. The crew was polite and efficient from start to finish, The MRC team completed the job in a week. The new wood shakes come with a 50-year material warranty and a 7-year workmanship warranty. MRC used stainless steel fasteners and nails since we live near the beach. They are not as susceptible to salt air damage as galvanized nails. We were pleased that they were able to save us some money by reusing our stainless steel valley metal in the process of the construction. We unreservedly recommend MRC Roofing. They are far and away better than any of the roofers we have contacted or used in the past.

Our roofs had some pesky water leaks that we decided to have fixed. MRC came highly recommended by three of our friends. The owner of MRC came to our house and then his estimator provided us with a very thorough reroofing proposal that included notes and photos of carpentry scopes in order to repair some dry rot and a deck that had to be removed and reinstalled for accessibility. MRC was backlogged with a lot of work at the time due to some recent heavy winds on the island, but they were able to squeeze our job in on shorter notice than expected. MRC installed temporary water proofing over our leak areas free of charge until they could schedule the project. It turns out our hot water solar panels were in the way and it was tough to find a hot water contractor on short notice. MRC was able to work around the hot water panels until a hot water contractor could be coordinated with. Our new Malarkey asphalt shingles are solar reflective along with the new silicone coating. We live next to the ocean so MRC only used stainless steel fasteners and aluminum flashings that are more corrosion resistant than our existing galvanized accessories that were rusting. MRC was able to complete most of the work in one week. We are very happy with the results, and you will be also if you call MRC for a free DETAILED quote.

We recently had our roof replaced by Protech and we are very pleased with the outcome. The team at Protech did an amazing job and met all the times they promised. We took a long time to finalize the job because of some issues but the team at Protech honored and extended the quote they first gave us. I can't say enough about our contact Jared who we worked with thru the entire process. Jared provided great communication and was very timely with this information with us. The team that did the work was top notch and very professional. We added on a job to add on gutter to the house and that was also a seamless operation with these professionals. The team also did quality work to make the repairs our 60+ year old house desperately needed to prepare for the reroofing job. We contacted 3 roofing companies and no doubt this company is the best in the business. We are very pleased with Protech, Jared and the whole team!

I recently had Protech Roofing blow insulation into my attic. They spent about 3 hours and left without a trace. No mess. I can also say that anyone who has an attic should get insulation as it makes a noticeable difference. I will use AC less often now and when I do, it wont use as much energy. My ceiling was hot during the day before and now it feels very cool. Full disclosure, I worked with Protech on a large commercial project for my day job and they also were very efficient and communicated well which is why I trusted them to help with my personal home.

Joseph Daneau★★★★★7 years ago

Protech Roofing is a first rate business. I've been a licensed contractor for 12 years. Charlie's guys are great to work with. Yes ! I would recommend them to everybody ! Go Charlie and Thank You...

Just in time for this summer heat!! Last year my split system AC started to leak on the inside of our house, and finally after 27 years she no longer worked I researched best brands, models and companies before reaching out to APB construction. Out of all the yelp and google reviews this one stood out to me. I inquired to get a quote and received a call same day to go over pricing. The call was the perfect balance of inquiry, salesman ship but most importantly true aloha spirit. I got other quotes all similar in pricing but didn't have the same experience I did with my initial quote call. Because of the customer experience I chose this company. I reached out to inquire about scheduling an install and the hard part was done for me, this company truly made the whole process seem less. They removed my old system and quickly installed my new one all in the same day. We had gone without the AC for a few months and it was so nice to finally be cooling off the house. I will definitely be recommending this company to both family and friends when they inquire on what company helped my house get back to its igloo status in this summer heat.

Excellent customer service. We had issues with the coils on a few of our A/C Carrier wall mounted units. From the beginning Trenton was very professional and responsive. He ensured the parts were under warranty, and we were able to schedule the repair within just a few days. During the work, he explained everything in detail, replaced the coils, and cleaned the units, and there were no surprises. Trenton also checked and cleaned a few other units. Highly recommend APB HVAC.

Kurt Semon★★★★★a year ago

We recently returned to the island and moved back into our townhome. Unfortunately the 2.5 ton AC unit wasn’t working properly so I started requesting service. The first company did a fair free assessment but didn’t carry the older R22 refrigerant and provided some quotes on replacing this aging unit. He also couldn’t isolate the leak but said the system was low which is a sign of leakage. When APB arrived the tech confirmed the drop in refrigerant and inspected the system in the ceiling. He didn’t find the leak there so he went back to diagnosing the compressor. After some further analysis he found it and had R22 on hand for recharging the system. As you can see the system is aging but APB was able to buy us time and provided a verbal quote for consideration. A+ service and professionalism with no upselling. And a special thanks to our tech who answered all of my curious questions. Apologies I don’t recall his name.

I was repairing a bedroom flood in a basement and discovered several issues whose best solution was the application of spray foam. I contacted the Magnus Spray Foam company. Arriving at a solution was easy. Three inches of spray foam on the walls and spray foam the rim joists. The team arrived and their work was neat and efficient. The clean up was very good. I recommend that if you're searching for a spray foam option, check out Magnus.

Excellent work for a fair price. When it came time to get insulation for my basement, after a few quotes and conversations, I decided to go with Magnus Construction Services and I'm glad I did. The agreed price was respected and the work was completed as I'd asked. The crew was respectful and cleaned up afterwards. Thank you Conrad and MCS for making this a positive experience.

I contacted Conrad at Magnus and he had Eduardo schedule me in! Right now construction is very busy and the little guys can get overlooked but they fit my jobs in. Eduardo had his crew come out to my place a couple of times and Sukh and Zarha were fast and good! Very friendly and cleaned up beautifully after they were done. Prices very competitive! Highly recommended!

This is a New Additional Home Depot Location in Honolulu. Logistical convenience is a major factor, this store is located in Mapunapuna, Towns industrial hub & close to freeway on & offramps. In comparison to the other store being smack dab in the midst of the Road work nightmare of Rail Construction on Dillingham Blvd. This is a brand new, clean, spacious & well layed out version of the neighborhood go to for home improvement, it definitely improved my shopping missions. All the interactions Ive had w/anyone who works there is a truly pleasant & positive one. Everyone is so nice & helpful. Highly recommend!!

Stopped in for a small bolt to fix my daughter's scooter. While I was looking for the correct size the power went out and their computer and payment system went down. When I went to check out, they were still down and the woman at the register let me know it was fine and she'd take care of it and not to worry about the payment. It may have been only about fifty cents, but the kindness from the staff here will definitely be the reason I come back here in the future!

I don't usually write a review. They'd have to be extremely excellent or completely crappie. In this case, it's crappie. Four and a half months ago, I purchased a cordless angle grinder, which worked well until yesterday. The rpm had slowed, so I changed the battery, thinking I was low on battery power, but it was the tool. The following morning, I brought the entire tool and receipt for return. The service center referred me to a supervisor. I explained why I was returning the tool, and she asked if I had the BOX. I didn't have the BOX... then she said that she couldn't accept the return. Who, after four months, keeps the tool's BOX? Don't buy anything from City Mill. I'm never going back. If I could leave negative stars, this place has -5☆.

Erika month ago

I’ve been a loyal City Mill customer since 2000, always choosing to support a locally owned and operated business over big-box stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s. I’ve made it a point to check with City Mill first before going anywhere else — that is, until my most recent experience. On my last visit, I needed to have two keys made — one house key and one motorcycle key (with my own blank) — as well as purchase some lumber and two saw blades for my circular and miter saws. The store was quiet, with only one other customer at the key counter, so I patiently waited my turn. When it was finally my turn, the older gentleman assisting customers at the key counter — who appeared to be in his late 70s — greeted me with no smile, no warmth, and a clear attitude of annoyance. I placed my keys on the counter, and he immediately picked up the blank motorcycle key, saying he couldn’t make a copy and that I “might as well throw it away.” I thought he was joking, but he slammed the key down on the counter and said, “How do you think this company makes money? Do you think we make money taking your blank and making copies?” At that point, it became clear he was serious and extremely rude. As a former business owner of nearly 20 years, I would never have allowed anyone representing my company to treat a customer that way. I told him I’d take my business elsewhere, and he dismissively waved his hands and said, “Go right ahead,” as if I were the problem. Still in disbelief, I spoke with the manager to share what had just happened — but unfortunately, she was less than helpful and offered no meaningful resolution or apology. After years of supporting City Mill, this experience completely changed my opinion of the company. I’ve decided I will no longer shop there and will instead take all my business to Home Depot or Lowe’s from now on. This was a one-star experience from start to finish — rude service, poor attitude, and no accountability from management.

Frequently Asked Questions — Spray Foam Insulation in Honolulu

Below are common questions Honolulu, HI homeowners ask about spray foam insulation cost, types, and installation. For local pricing and to compare verified contractors in Honolulu, browse the listings above.

Is spray foam insulation worth the cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Spray foam creates an air-tight seal that traditional insulation cannot match, reducing energy bills by 15–35% annually. It also adds structural rigidity, acts as a moisture and vapor barrier, reduces outside noise, and can increase home resale value. The higher upfront cost compared to fiberglass is typically recovered within 3–7 years. One important note: because spray foam creates a very tight building envelope, proper mechanical ventilation is important to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent interior moisture buildup. This is typically handled by an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) — a system that brings fresh outside air in while pushing stale air out, recovering the energy from the outgoing air so you don't waste what you paid to heat or cool — or a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which works similarly but is optimized for cold climates. A qualified contractor will assess whether your home needs ventilation upgrades as part of the installation.
How much does spray foam insulation cost in Honolulu, HI?
In Honolulu, HI and the surrounding area, spray foam insulation typically costs $1.00–$3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the type and your home's specifics. Open-cell foam runs $0.44–$0.65 per board foot, while closed-cell foam costs $1.00–$2.00 per board foot. A typical 2,000 sq ft home attic in Honolulu costs $2,000–$6,000. Most Honolulu homeowners recoup this investment within 3–7 years through energy savings of 15–35% annually.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and less expensive. It expands significantly and is ideal for interior walls, attics, and soundproofing. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, stronger, and provides a moisture barrier — making it better for exterior applications, crawl spaces, and areas prone to flooding or humidity. Closed-cell also has a higher R-value per inch (R-6 to R-7 vs R-3.5 to R-4 for open-cell). One key difference: open-cell foam allows some vapor movement, while closed-cell acts as a vapor barrier — an important consideration for your home's ventilation needs.
How long does spray foam insulation last?
Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation options available, with a lifespan of 80+ years when properly installed. Unlike fiberglass batting which can sag and settle over time, spray foam maintains its shape and insulating properties indefinitely. It will typically outlast the building it is installed in.
How do I find a qualified spray foam insulation contractor in Honolulu, HI?
When searching for a spray foam contractor in Honolulu, HI, look for ones who are licensed, insured, and have verifiable reviews. Spray foam requires specialized equipment and training — improper installation can cause off-gassing, adhesion failure, or fire hazards. Ask for references, verify their insurance, and get at least 2–3 quotes. A qualified Honolulu contractor will also assess your home's ventilation needs — a tightly sealed spray foam installation requires adequate mechanical ventilation to prevent moisture and indoor air quality issues. FoamMatch pre-screens all listed contractors in Honolulu for licensing and insurance so you can compare verified professionals in your area.
How long does spray foam installation take?
Most residential spray foam jobs take 1–2 days depending on the size of the area. A standard attic takes 4–8 hours. After spraying, the foam cures within 24 hours, though most contractors recommend waiting 24–72 hours before occupying the space due to off-gassing during the curing process.
Does spray foam insulation need to be replaced?
No — spray foam insulation does not need to be replaced under normal circumstances. Unlike fiberglass insulation which degrades over time, spray foam maintains its R-value and air sealing properties for the life of the building. The only reasons to remove or replace spray foam are water damage, renovation work, or improper original installation.
